  • Public Health Funerals Survey 2010

    This research report, based on a survey of local authorities in May 2010, looks in detail at public health funerals conducted by local authorities in the last year, to provide a picture of how many funerals councils are conducting and how costly these are.

  • Future demographic trends in England

    This latest research by the LGA examines recent and anticipated demographic trends in England. It uses data from the Office for National Statistics to explore the effects mortality, fertility and migration have had, and continue to have on the demographics on England. The report then goes on to summarise how this will be played out at a local level.

    This research was conducted for the Local Government Association and Local Government Improvement and Development. The report summarises local authority activity relating to climate change adaptation and mitigation and the resources and support required to continue their work in this area.

  • Implementing outcomes based accountability in children's services: an overview of the process and impact

    The Outcomes Based Accountability (OBA) model has been used as a way of structuring planning to improve outcomes for whole populations and for improving services. The OBA approach focuses on outcomes that are desired and monitoring and evidencing progress towards those desired outcomes.The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) was commissioned by Local Government Association Analysis and Research (LGAAR), on behalf of Local Government Improvement and Development, to identify the impact of the OBA approach on LA practice in Children's Services through nine case studies

  • Local authority approaches to the school admissions process

    Recent legislation has emphasised the important role of local authorities in promoting equity and fair access within the school admissions process. Schools need to maintain a balanced and representative intake that reflects the local community and parents have a right to be heard and to contribute to shaping school policies. The LG Group commissioned NFER to provide an up-to-date overview of the pros and cons of different approaches to dealing with school admissions.

  • An analysis of youth offending teams' inspection reports

    Youth Offending Teams (YOTs) were launched across every local authority area in England and Wales in April 2000 to bring together a range of services dealing with young people and crime prevention. All 157 YOTs had been inspected over a five to six year cycle that was led by HMI Probation. Commissioned by LGA and produced by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NfER), this study examined evidence from 60 inspection reports, alongside Annual Performance Assessments of Services for Children and Young People, and National Performance Indicator data focusing on youth offending issues

  • Intergenerational practice: outcomes and effectiveness

    The NfER, with the National Youth Agency (NYA) and National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), was commissioned by the LGA to examine what works in intergenerational practice. Intergenerational practice refers to activities that bring together older adults and young people or children. Five intergenerational projects were selected to cover a range of foci and target groups, focusing on football, arts, knife crime, living history, and personal and social education.

  • The Impact of the Baby Peter Case on Applications for Care Orders

    Following the death of Baby Peter Connelly in August 2007, the government took steps to review the effectiveness of arrangements for safeguarding children in England, which led to the publication of the Laming Review in March 2009. The LGA commissioned the NfER to look at the impact of the case of Baby Peter Connelly on local authorities’ applications for care orders and child protection more widely.
