Child Poverty

The LGA believes it is crucial for councils, working with local partners, to support the most vulnerable children and families. This support is particularly important in an economic recession, and it is brought into sharp focus by concerns for families where children may be at risk. Poverty impacts on the lives of children and families, but also on the wider community and the cost of public services.

The LGA has worked in partnership with the Child Poverty Action Group to produce support materials to help welfare rights advisers carry out benefit take up work. Under the banner of "Quids for Kids" you can find top tips for successful take up work, a wide range of case studies and a supportive policy briefing. Further materials will be added shortly.

There is a flyer which promotes the Quids for Kids Materials which can be downloaded here. Hard copies are available from info@lga.gov.uk.

The LGA has responded to the government's consultation on a child poverty bill strongly supporting the aims of the proposals but rejecting plans for a statutory duty or target for councils and other public services.
