LGA Selector Panel

The ‘selector’ function will be carried out by a new LGA Panel of councillors, from all the four party groups involved in the LGA. This Panel is made up of four lead members and four substitutes.

As with all LGA Boards and other bodies, the agendas and minutes of the Selector Panel will be published on the LGA website and it will operate with the same standards of openness and transparency that apply to the LGA overall. The Selector Panel meetings are also open to the public, if you would like to attend a panel meeting please contact the LGA.

At the first meeting of the Panel, Cllr Keith Mitchell CBE was elected Chairman and Cllr Roger Symonds Vice-chairman.

Councillor Mitchell said “I am delighted to have been appointed as Chairman of the Selector Panel. I believe that the Sustainable Communities Act presents a significant opportunity for communities to change the way government does business and I look forward, with my panel colleagues, to reviewing and short-listing innovative and creative proposals from local authorities.”
Cllr Mitchell is leader of Oxfordshire Council and Chairman of the LGA Resources Panel.

The next meeting of the Panel takes place on Tuesday 22 December 2009. The agenda for the meeting is now available.

  • Sustainable communities act The Sustainable Communities Act 2007 aims to promote the sustainability of local communities. It begins from the principle that local people know best what needs to be done to promote the sustainability of their area, but that sometimes they need central government to act to enable them to do so. It provides a channel for local people and the councils which represent them to ask central government to take such action.
