What Europe means for you?

The LGA estimates that around 50% of all new regulation affecting local councils has its origins in the EU. Whether it’s EU legislation on procurement, waste, recycling, energy efficiency, employment, or equalities, it is by and large local authorities that have to implement much of it.

So whatever your view on the EU, decisions made in Brussels have a very real and direct impact on local government and the communities that they serve. This is why the LGA has a dedicated European team works to influence future EU policy and legislation to get the best deal for local authorities.

In this section we make sense of EU processes and jargon for councils, we will outline how the EU affects councils, and how we go about representing the interests of councils in EU affairs.
