Local Authority Swine Flu Survey
In October 2009, the Local Government Association (LGA) undertook a detailed survey of emergency planning officers across England and Wales. The purpose was to gather feedback on how councils are proactively supporting communities to deal with swine flu and how they are coping as an organisation. The survey also looked at how well the LGA Group's work in this area was being received by the sector.
The survey showed that local authorities are taking the risks associated with swine flu and its impact on their authority's business seriously:
- 89 per cent of respondents indicated that this is currently either a standing agenda item, or discussed frequently at, council-wide senior management team meetings.
- 91 per cent said that their authority has a business continuity plan in place to ensure that services can be maintained in the event of a swine flu pandemic.
- 28 per cent of those respondents whose authority does have a business continuity plan in place thought their plan was very effective and a further 64 per cent quite effective.
- LGA support is widely valued - 80 per cent had used the swine flu briefings whilst 58 per cent had used the weekly bulletin for emergency planners, and the majority who had used these resources found them useful.
