Packaging collection systems consultation
This consultation seeks to establish whether it is possible to find 5 or 6 systems which could become standard and to establish what barriers there may be for councils in moving towards using these systems.
This is part of the work of the Packaging Recycling Action Group which seeks to increase quality and quantity of packaging materials collected from the household waste stream and to consider in particular how more plastics can be collected for recycling. This group was set up as a response to concerns from residents, consumers and voters who contact retailers, their council, and government ministers regularly to express their concerns about the inconsistency in what they can recycle and also asking why they cannot recycle certain items.
The LGA entered these discussions on the basis there is likely to be a need for a financial contribution to councils if they are to extend their recycling systems to collect more types of plastics or if they are to change their existing system to establish more consistency across the country. As such we also want to assess what incentives (including financial) councils would need in order to accept implementation of a different system compared with the one they are already operating.
The PRAG hopes to present a report to the Government on how to increase the quantity and quality of packaging materials collected for recycling by local authorities – and the information gathered through this consultation will be an important aspect of that report. PRAG has been asked to submit thoughts as soon as possible so this consultation is necessarily short and quick! There are only 4 questions and a nominal prize available for 10 lucky councils who submit a response – to be picked out of a hat!
