Council wins ban on dog trainer

Greyhound

A greyhound trainer in Wirral has been given a lifetime ban on keeping animals and a four-month suspended sentence after being prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act. It is thought to be the first time the act has been used by a council to protect the racing dogs. The trainer had 29 greyhounds taken away after monitoring of his premises by animal welfare officers from Wirral council, and he subsequently admitted 11 separate charges. Animal welfare charities are urging other councils to use the powers to rescue greyhounds from unsuitable conditions.
