Fire update

John Ransford

I write this as I return from the LGA annual fire conference in Manchester.

It was an outstanding event for all concerned; just a pity that the communities and local government minister did not turn up for the final session.

I have attended most of these conferences over the years. My overwhelming impression this time was of the confidence of the sector, particularly the willingness to take on the deep financial and public service challenges we all face with resolution and vigour.

Everyone knows how important this service is in local communities, and it has always been highly rated by local people.

But there was real evidence here of agenda setting, partnership working, pushing forward practical demonstrations of Total Place and engaging constructively in better performance from diminishing resources.

None of this is easy, but the issues are addressed more effectively from a basis of confidence and competence.

The success of the event itself was another testament to partnership working between the LGA Group, the Greater Manchester fire and rescue authority and Manchester city council.

All played their part superbly – a real demonstration that local government at its best is an exemplar for serving communities to the standard they deserve.
