The safety and protection of children in England is never far from the minds of those leading local services, in councils as well as police and health. Much has been said about organisational structures and accountability lines since the tragic events surrounding the death of Baby Peter became public. But, Lord Laming's report in March, quickly followed by the DCSF Action Plan in May and, in due course, the final report of the Social Work Task Force and the conclusions of a Select Committee Inquiry in social work, all talk of a shared ambition; how can we support the people at the front line to provide the best protection of child and make communities safe places for children to live and thrive.
This important national conference will bring together an impressive range of speakers from all sectors and levels of government to explore developments in safeguarding and children's social work in 2009, looking at the challenges, the responses and where we go now to make social work a profession that is respected and which attracts the brightest and best to do this invaluable work, often in the most challenging circumstances.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Sir Roger Singleton, Chief Adviser, National Safeguarding Delivery Unit (NSDU)
- Moira Gibb CBE, Chair, Social Work Taskforce
- Mayor Sir Steve Bullock, Executive Mayor, London Borough of Lewisham and Chair, LGE
- Kim Bromley Derry, Chair, ADCS
- Margaret Dillon, Executive Director of Children's Services and Deputy Chief Executive, Action for Children
- Keith Brumfitt, Director of Strategy, Children Workforce Development Council
