From April 2010 councils will be legally required to carry out an economic assessment of their area. This new duty will underpin a stronger future role for councils in economic development and in shaping their local economies.
This conference will provide real insights and practical help for those in councils responsible for preparing an assessment, using new guidance from the IDeA which will be launched at the conference. The guidance is based on a programme of shared learning with a group of councils who looked in depth at what authorities would need to do to prepare for the new duty and this will provide an opportunity for these participating councils to share learning with local government colleagues. With the focus on practical learning, the programme will include case studies from councils that have already begun work on preparing an assessment and interactive workshops. Topics covered will include using and interpreting data, building ownership of the assessment and making sure that it influences regional strategies.
