  • Improving police accountability - the LGA's proposal

    Introducing directly elected individuals is not, in the LGA’s view, the best way to strengthen police accountability. The police need to be accountable to the public they serve, and that accountability needs to be strengthened. However, we believe that directly elected individuals will weaken the ability of the police, councils and other public services in the fundamental objective of cutting crime.

    Schools have faced new rules or guidelines every other school day over the past decade, according to new research. The LGA’s report, “Local freedom or central control?”, proposes a series of principles to explain why the education system cannot be run from the centre.

    The Local Government Group has set out an open and comprehensive offer to central government, offering to work with the Government in undertaking radical reform of the state by initiating place-based budgeting. This work has already begun but must move forward immediately to protect services and make savings.
