To support local authorities achieve the flexible, skilled workforce they will need to meet future challenges the LGA Group have been working hard to produce robust and useful data relating to the local government workforce. At the same time we are working with partners to minimise the burden of data collection centrally and improve the quality of workforce data locally.

  • Quarterly Public Sector Employment Survey

    This section provides data from the ONS Quarterly PUblic Sector Employment Survey. This includes the headcount, FTE, gender and contract status of all directly employed local authority staff in England and Wales.

  • Sickness Absence and Causes Survey 2009

    This survey was conducted by LGA Analysis and Research, on behalf of the Local Government Employers (LGE). The latest survey has found that sickness absence has not increased, and more authorities are embracing the Health and Safety Executive management standards for work related stress.

  • Workforce Data Standards

    This section provides details of the newly published workforce data standards. Developed in partnership with DCSF and others, these standards provide definitions and codesets for all workforce related data items. This includes an standardised set of job roles. The standards will enable authorities to collect one item of data and use it to respond to multiple data requests, including the School Workforce Census and NMDS-SC.

  • Apprenticeship and Trainees Survey 2009

    LGA research has found that councils already employed 14,400 apprentices and trainees, up from 7,500 last year. A survey of councils found that they intend to provide 18,600 apprenticeship and trainee opportunities by the end of next year as they step up help for young people hit hard by the recession.

  • Local Government Earnings Survey

    This section contains paybill and average pay rate data for all local government employees (excluding teachers). This data includes pay rates by occupation, gender and full-time/part-time status. Some outputs in this release of the 2007/08 and 2008/09 Earnings Survey have benefitted from refinements to methodology

  • Local Government Workforce Survey 2009

    The latest results show that councils reporting recruitment or retentions difficulties has fallen for the fifth year running, although recruitment and retention difficulties for occupations such as social workers have increased. The full report shows the progress councils are making in addressing workforce challenges such as leadership development, recruitment and skills issue.
