Quarterly Public Sector Employment Survey

This section provides all local authority data in England and Wales from the Quarterly Public Sector Employment Survey. Data is available from quarter 2 2006 onwards and current data will be publihsed every quarter from now on (collection and analysis cycle means publication is approx, 6 months behind collection). This data is published with the written permission of all 410 ( pre-1.4.2009) local authorities in England and Wales.

For each quarter two files are published:

  • an excel sheet containing all data for each local authority; and
  • a PDF overview containing headlinefigures and breakdowns by region and authority type.

The most recent quarter's data will be available below. Due to the amount of data involved, all other data will be available in the archive pages at the bottom of this page.

Notes on data

The data that has been shared since Quarter 2 2006 does not take account of revisions that have taken place to the estimates provided by local authorities after the point of the original submission. For example, some local authorities revise their estimates of employment, going back a quarter, if they have completed a data cleansing exercise of their HR systems. In this sense the data provided up to and including Q4 2008 should be considered a 'snapshot' of employment for each individual locla authority at the time of the data collection.

The data also includes some records for individual local authorities that have been imputed. Records are imputed when a local authority fails to respond for a specific quarter. Rather than simply reporting these as a 'blank' or 'nil' return in the data the ONS have provided the best estimate of their employment for that time. Future data sent from ONS to LGA will take account of revisions. Furthermore, imputed data will be identified.
