Delivering more for less: maximising value in the public sector

The LGA has published a report setting out its view of how, at a time when we need to repay huge amounts of public debt, public spending could be reduced without affecting the quality of frontline services.

The report outlines proposals suggesting we could save around £4.5bn by reducing unnecessary Whitehall activity and the burden it imposes on councils, as well as by giving councils greater control over local spending decisions, in line with what research shows people want. Proposals include cutting back the burden of government monitoring and regulation of councils, stopping unnecessary central government policy activity and prescription, reducing government ring-fencing and control of council spending, and streamlining the number of and spending by quangos.
